How long should dentures last?
Your denture will not last forever as they wear down from chewing food, incorrect maintenance and from your mouth and gums changing shape over time so your denture should be checked on a regular basis. Everybody is different but your denture should last between 7 and 10 years.
Can I wear them overnight?
This is up to you. There is a lot of debate on whether your dentures should be removed before going to sleep. As long you do not wake up with a sore jaw or facial muscles, do what you feel comfortable with.
How can I clean my denture?
Both natural teeth and dentures need be cleaned regularly. Your denture should be rinsed under water after each meal and cleaned at least once a day with a soft tooth brush and a mild soap solution. Do not use use toothpaste as they have bleaching and abrasive properties that are not designed for denture cleaning. Clean your dentures over a folded towel or basin half-filled with water to prevent breakage. Dentures are quite fragile so hold your denture with two fingers instead of the palm of your hand when cleaning. Most dentures are broken during cleaning.
My new denture is uncomfortable.
It takes about 2 weeks to get used to your new denture. It feels bulky in the mouth, and there is a temptation to play with it all the time with your tongue. It may take a little while to develop new chewing and speaking techniques. A small amount of irritation might occur but with time and a little patience, you will overcome these difficulties and adjust to your new denture.
